Comments Broken

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

It would appear that I’ve broken comments when I re-themed the site. So, still a few kinks to work out in the theme. Old comments are still there, honest, but until I fix the theme, they just won’t show up, and nobody will be able to add new ones.

Whoops.

Gallery online!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Well, I’m not sure what’s been changed on the server yet, but I finally have Gallery2 up and running at gallery.unnerving.org. I suspect that Apache’s mod_security was getting in the way, and it might have been disabled. I’ll be able to confirm this when I hear back from my friend that’s running the hosting.

What’s most wonderful, in my opinion, is that the iPhoto2Gallery plugin works perfectly. This makes it almost painless for us to start uploading photos that we want to share, since all our recent photos (taken with our Canon digital camera) are managed in iPhoto on the iBook.

I love good technology days. Heck, I even solved some problems at work today.

Hooray, I have a Method again!

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Well, it’s certainly been a while, but I once again can get my Method on. Basically, I finally got off my butt, set up my virtual host (courtesy of Binary Tribe) and re-loaded my blog database from a backup.

In other news…

This was definitely far less effort than trying to get Gallery2 going. I’m not sure if it’s me, or every server I touch, but I cannot, for the life of me, get Gallery2 to work. I’ve tried it on a virtual host here. I’ve tried it on my Ubuntu system at home. I’ve tried it on a RHEL4 system at work. Each time, I end up with bizarre and different brokenness. I seriously don’t understand it. Turning on debugging gives me a steaming pile of useless information, so don’t suggest that unless you’re willing to sit next to me and debug it. Should I not be using the latest Gallery2? Input is welcome.

is this thing on?

going offline for a bit for a server move

Monday, February 5th, 2007

This blog will be offline for a while so I can kill off a hosting account and move it to another service.

I know all zero of my readership will be heartbroken by this news.

Not dead yet

No, I haven’t fallen off the face of the planet. I’ve just been busy, and haven’t thought of much original to say yet. It’ll come.

Comment Spam

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

I’ve changed things so that you have to register to comment. I got sick of dealing with 15 spam messages a day to moderate.

You should never, ever…

… decide that deleting the “Groups” subtree from your LDAP server and reloading it from a new import is a good thing after you’ve moved it into production.

After burning myself very badly by thinking that such an operation would be okay, the new philosophy is that any change that needs to be made which affects more than one object in the directory shall be made programmatically, so that it can be checked thoroughly for errors before being let loose.

Sadly, some things can only be learned through pain.

Why you shouldn’t let snarky SysAdmins name tools

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

Chef: heh
Chef: i should name this tool “cheese”
Chef: is writing a tool to maintain netgroups in LDAP
Chef: the tool to maintain the netgroups -> user-based host access rules is called “ham”
Chef: (host access mapping)
Chef: so it’s only fitting, you see.
Chef: you’d have ham, and cheese.
Chef: that, and netgroups are cheesy anyway.

BigD: could be eggs
BigD: ham and eggs

Chef: fitting
Chef: since it’s all a scrambled mess anyway

BigD: the yolk’s on you

Yes, I am “Chef”.

An old new look? Or a new old look?

Monday, June 12th, 2006

I’ve upgraded wordpress to the latest version for this site, and also reverted back to the default Kubrick style that comes with Wordpress.

While I liked the dark color scheme, I found it hard to actually read. So, back to Kubrick we go until I find the time to tweak something else up.

In the mean time, however, it’s entirely possible that some of the formatting for the blog might be a bit off, and for that I apologize. I’ll get to it eventually.

I’m also hoping that I’ll actually have some more to write about soon. I’m really busy at work, but I’m hesitant to use that as my sole source for topics to discuss. We’ll see what happens.

Finally, I’ve added another journal for my wife at azure.unnerving.org, where she hopes to do a photo journal of sorts, starting with her recently completed trip to France.
